Sewage backups are a lot more common than you think, though they happen less frequently now because all sewage piping switched to PVC in the 1980s. However, if your home was built before the late 1970s and early 1980s, you may be at risk of a sewage backup due to the wear and tear of cast iron and clay sewer pipes. We see it all the time and have developed an expert approach to combating this common issue.

Sewage Backup Case Study

Last week, a client Janice came to us with sewage backup issues. We found the culprit to be her old cast iron and clay sewer pipes. This is the story of her problem, and what NuBilt did to provide a solution.

Janice called Nubilt with her issue and within 48 hours NuBilt’s president Issa Ashour was on-site, walking the premises with her and explaining what was causing her issue. Comprehensible communication is something NuBilt takes pride in, so we always make sure the client has a good understanding of what happened, and what it’s going to take to fix the issue.

Though there are a couple of different issues that can happen to your sewer line to cause a backup, What happened to Janice is that her sewage pipes slipped and became misaligned, initiating blockage that caused the backup. Other sewer line issues that could be a culprit to backups are depicted below.

After Issa explained that switching to PVC pipes is the best way to prevent further risk of property damage, Janice gave the okay to redo her sewer lines. She was talked through the process of where the pipes would go and the installation. Due to the fact that the pipes were being manipulated, she took this opportunity to add a wet bar with a sink in her downstairs basement.

Janice replaced her entire sewer line system to be safe. As we followed the line outside to the sewer main, we noticed a sharp 45-degree turn in the direction of the sewer line due to a tree. With precise identification technology, we were able to locate the sewer line and use a pulling method to uproot it, saving major yard displacement and keeping the tree alive.

Last but not least we replaced the sewer line that connects to the city’s sewer main, which runs underneath the road. This last step ensures a clean flow from the drain to the city’s water treatment center.

Sewage Backups No More!

After about 3 weeks of hard work, NuBilt successfully completed replacing Janice’s cast iron and clay sewer pipes with PVC. She is very happy with how things are running and excited to get started with us on a basement remodel without worries about her space being ruined by a sewer backup.

We try to make your property damage repair experience as simple, fast, and fair as possible. If you have any questions or concerns about your property, don’t hesitate to reach out to NuBilt at 303-368-4688.
